We are SSHADA, the Southern Sudan Humanitarian Action Development Agency Inc., a Canadian non-profit corporation founded in 2003 and based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  Our founder Mr. Senos Timon is a recent immigrant to Canada from Southern Sudan and has first hand knowledge of the great need for humanitarian assistance there.

A devastating civil war between the Government of Sudan in the north and rebel forces in the south, has continued almost unabated since Sudan’s independence in 1956.  Over the past 18 years alone, the war has resulted in more than two million casualties and an estimated four million people displaced.  The majority of victims in Sudan have been women, children and the elderly.

SSHADAs development and rehabilitation efforts are aimed at providing basic, health care and educational services as well as facilitating programs for poverty reduction and economic empowerment to the people of Kajokeji county and area.  Kajokeji is a small county in Southern Sudan that shares its southern border with Uganda.  This area has been especially hard hit by the civil war with much of its social and economic infrastructure destroyed.

Why we have organized

In 1984, Mr. Timon founder of SSHADA became separated from his family due to the civil war that raged in the Sudan.  Eventually Mr. Timon was able to immigrate to Canada.  After arriving in Canada he was finally able to locate his parents and other members of his family.  Some of his family had fled to Uganda, ending up in refugee camps, while others joined the thousands of other internally displaced persons in the Sudan.  In 2002 Mr. Timon was able to return to the Sudan to visit his family.  In his own words, this is what he found.

“I was stunned by the conditions in which they lived. It was clear to me that things have drastically changed, compared with what it was 15 years ago. I found that the conditions of living, especially for those who were internally displaced, were deplorable. The basic social service, even by African standards, left a lot to be desired. The people were living in poor makeshift houses. For most of them there was no access to clean drinking water and, to make it worst, the water had to be fetched from a long distance. The medical services were rudimentary to say the least and, for others they were non-existent. Most of the schools were either leveled down during the war or only the walls were left standing. The lucky children, who had access to teachers, took their lessons under the trees or in roofless classrooms. Needless to say, the classes have to be terminated whenever it rained.

Apart from lack of infrastructures, the people do not look healthy and are apathetic with no motivation. There were signs of malnutrition in the children but you could also see them in the adults. Sure enough there was lack of food, but in addition, inadequate medical care and chronic diseases have taken their toll. Poverty was rampart because the economy had totally collapsed and basic things like clothing and shoes were a big problem.

I came back to my second home Canada with a heavy heart and for a while agonized as to what I could do in the face of such a huge problem. I was aware of the Canadians and other Nationality values of compassion and respect for human rights. This inspired and encouraged me to think of initiating a non-profit cooperation, which I hoped, would provide charitable activities among my people so as to improve their quality of life and motivate them to undertake economic activities and take interest in community services.”

Mr. Timon along with a circle of close friends decided to create an organization who’s purpose would be to raise awareness of the situation in Southern Sudan, develop projects to provide humanitarian and rehabilitative assistance to the people and to fund raise in support these projects.

“It is my hope that SSHADA with the help and support of compassionate and generous Canadians will be able to realize its goals of delivering the much-needed help to the people of Southern Sudan.”  Mr. Senos Timon
